Gangtou is a village with a rich history of farming culture and educational achievements. Moreover, it was a transportation hub and famous for its eight views and unique ancient lanes. In our project, we use these historical aspects of Gangtou village extensively to formulate a new direction for both its locals and visitors.
Historical identity of the village is carefully researched and utilized to form the new program of the renovated buildings.
The three renovated buildings are planned to encourage the visitors to go through full village experience.
The three buildings are connected through the same theme of moving through an alley with different views.
A set of rooftop viewing platforms is designed as an extension of unique alleys and to rediscover the eight views that has already lost in history.
Axonometric drawings and programs of the buildings. Each building emphasizes on one main function of cultural education, practical education and historical(knowledge) education paired together with different economic activities.
Firstly, the farming culture, which has been carried out throughout generations, is continued in a modern way by forming a workshop where locals can teach tourists how to process and produce agricultural products. Secondly, Gangtou’s emphasis on knowledge and education is reflected by creating a teahouse where locally produced products are sold and a library about cultural aspects of the village are stored. Thirdly, a hostel for tourists temporarily visiting the village is created to encourage a rebirth of its culture and history as a transportation hub.
The teaching and learning activity in workshop will become a modern continuation of Gangtou’s rich educational tradition. In the teahouse, locals and tourists can converse about village culture over a cup of tea or on a game of chess. The hostel, teahouse, and workshop will allow locals to create new types of businesses.
